Neisseria gonorrhoeae may infect the anal/rectal canal of sexually active individuals. Detection of this organism is important for determining the risk for disease progression or transmission.

Gonorrhea is one of the most common bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) caused by Neisseria Gonorrhoeae. Because it usually does not produce symptoms, people are unaware that they may be carrying the bacteria. Gonorrhea testing is usually done via a pap smear, which is often uncomfortable and can be painful. There is an alternative method to test for the presence of gonorrhea by using a urine sample. It is important to test people who have had unprotected sex, as well as people who exhibit symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection. It is important to treat bacterial STDs because they can cause serious long term complications, like infertility.

This test is performed in following conditions such as:

• Previous chlamydia infection
• Having HIV
• New or multiple sex partners
• Having unprotected sex
• Painful urination
• Painful intercourse
• Abnormal vaginal or penile discharge

Also Known As: Urine, pain free

Requirements

The Gonorrhea test is a urine specimen with specific requirements. Client should withhold urination for at least 1-2 hours prior to specimen collection. Client should provide a first catch of urine, about 20-30 ml, from the initial stream into the collection cup and allow remainder of the stream to go into the toilet. Larger volumes may result in the dilution of the specimen and reduce sensitivity. Clients should not cleanse the genital area 1-2 hours prior to giving their urine specimen.
